Ya Allah bi, ya Allah biha, ya Allah bi husni’l-khatima! This is what the people sing in Tarim, Yemen. It is also commonly said in Kenya. They ask Allah day in out for a good ending! They ask Allah to let them die as muslims. Isn’t this just beautiful? Isn’t this something one should follow because we as muslims don’t know how we are going to end? Will we end as muslims? Only Allah knows. We can prepare for our ending but we never know how, when or were. It is related from imam Ahmad bin Hanbal that when he was lying on his deathbed he said: not yet! He fought with shaytan until the moment he died. From one of the Companions of the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – was related, I thought is was ‘Umar, that till the moment of his death he felt like he was standing with one leg in Jannah and the other in the Hellfire.
This also reminds us of the phrase in the Ratib of imam al-Haddad:
Ya Dha’l-Jalali wa’l-Ikram amitna ‘ala dini’l-islam
“Oh Possessor of Majesty and Honour, cause us to die in the religion of islam”
According to the hadith death is a gift for the believer. (Bayhaqi, Shu’ab al-iman).
Djabir ibn ‘Abdullah relates that he heard the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) say three days before he died: “Let no one of you die, except in a mental state in which he expects the best of Allah, the Lord of Majesty and Glory.” (Source: Sahih Muslim)
Amin ya rabb al-‘alamin!
